Should RCHS have uniforms?

High school is a place where students learn, make friends, and express themselves. One topic that many students and teachers have different opinions about is whether high schools have a dress code or require students to wear uniforms. Some people believe that dress codes help students focus on schoolwork and create a respectful learning environment, while others think they limit students’ freedom and uniqueness. Although dress codes have some benefits, they also have disadvantages that schools should consider before deciding what rules students should follow.

One advantage of having a dress code is that it can help students focus more on learning. When students follow similar clothing rules, there may be fewer distractions in the classroom. Instead of worrying about what other students are wearing, students pay more attention to their lessons and assignments. Dress codes can also help create a more respectful environment by setting clear expectations for what students should wear to school. Another benefit is that students may feel less pressure to wear expensive or trendy clothing to fit in. Having a dress code could help reduce some of that pressure and remind students that school is a place to learn, not a competition over who has the best clothes.

Sophomore Lucy Hefner stated, “I like being able to wear whatever I want because I can express myself through clothes.”

However, there are some disadvantages to having a dress code. A major problem is that dress codes can limit students’ ways to express themselves. Fashion is a way for people to show their personalities, interests, cultures, and uniqueness. Another problem is that some students and families may not be able to afford school uniforms. Buying several uniforms can become expensive for families with multiple children enrolled. However, schools could solve this problem by offering affordable uniforms, providing financial assistance, or allowing students to wear regular clothes that follow the dress code.

Junior Emma Mahler gives an opinion from the perspective of having uniforms before going to RCHS: “In my elementary school, I used to wear uniforms, and it saved me a lot of time getting ready for school in the morning because I didn’t have to plan my outfit. I like how RCHS doesn’t have uniforms because I can wear clothes that are comfortable”
