From September 25 to November 23, the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina is hosting the Students Against Hunger Committee. The RCHS National Honor Society (NHS) is getting involved, and you can, too.
Feeding America states, “In North Carolina, 1,713,790 people are facing hunger.”
The Food Bank is helping solve this issue by providing relief for more than 607,000 children, adults and seniors just in Central and Eastern North Carolina who don’t know when they are going to eat next. They also train people for jobs and offer disaster relief.
But they can’t do all this on their own. To achieve this, they host several events and one of those is the Students Against Hunger (SAH) Committee.
The SAH kickoff event was September 26 where students, including those from RCHS, toured one of the Food Bank’s 700+ local assistance sites and helped out where they could.
SAH’s goal is not only to help the Food Bank provide hunger relief, but also to learn leadership skills by rallying effort from student’s schools, fostering school spirit and hosting both a virtual food drive and a non-perishable food drive.
When prompted about how the RCHS is getting involved, NHS Community Liaison and Senior Mariam Masoud commented, “Currently we are working with them to start a fundraiser at the school. We were planning to do some small fundraising events like lemonade stands and hot chocolate stands, but soon we are planning on working with Ms Koch’s community workday to make crafts to sell at the art farm!”
By participating in a community workday and going to the art farm, you can already get involved. But you can also get involved by donating to these events.
Masoud noted, “We were looking to get craft supplies from students and teachers to help our community work day with creating quality crafts to sell.” So, make sure to keep an eye out for any announcements regarding where you can drop off donations!
The NHS’s goal is to get to $1000 dollars by the end of the school year to help the Food Bank provide no-cost markets, pantries, and meal sites. Raising $1000 dollars is no small feat, but anything helps.
