Recently, a big story in American politics has been President Trump’s banning of CNN, MS NOW, and Politico. Trump’s reason for this ban on Truth Social was “negative coverage.” He also said that outlets should not be able to constantly report “FICTION and LIES”.
In response, FOX News Media, ABC News, CBS News, CNN, and NBC News released a joint statement. The statement reads, “The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government. No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.”
CNN, MS NOW, and Politico then filed a First amendment lawsuit to restore their access calling the ban “a blatant violation” of the first amendment.
Shortly after the ban, Trump went to address the United Nations. While he was there, Kaitlan Collins from CNN asked him when the Iran war would end. She claimed that in a poll, two-thirds of Americans don’t think that America is winning. He responded by saying, “It’s an honor to be here. I’m surprised that CNN is here covering me.” He then said toCollins, “You should not be here covering me. You said you weren’t going to cover me. You shouldn’t be covering me.”
A federal judge ordered that Trump restore White House access for reporters from CNN, MS. NOW, and Politico. The judge said that the ban Trump put on the outlets was likely unconstitutional. CNN, MS NOW, and Politico are now allowed back at the White House.
The legal battle is still waging on, however. Trump’s attorneys argued that the outlets’ coverage threatened national security, though they did not offer evidence to support this claim. Attorneys for the outlets argued that the ban was a blatant First Amendment violation.
Trump has also launched his own 24/7 YouTube channel that’s promising to put its “biggest moments all in one place.” It has received criticism from democrats and press freedom advocates calling it “state-run media”.
As of the end of September, CNN, MS NOW, and Politico have asked a court to block Trump from enforcing this ban.
This is a developing story, and the battle between Trump and the press is certainly not over.
