What are Community Workdays, and why are they important?
Raleigh Charter High School stresses the importance of helping our community as a part of our education. A community workday is a day dedicated to a certain aspect of our community, whether on or off campus, and helping it become the best it can be.
What are some of the community workdays that RCHS offers?
There are dozens of different community workday options to choose from, but here are a few; Campus Beautification, Arts for Our Elders, Children’s Theater, Raleigh Rescue Mission, and Taking Action Against Poverty. At the beginning of each school year, each student fills out a form with their top preferences, and gets assigned a workday from there. RCHS Community Workdays take place two times per school year, once in the fall, and once in the spring.
What are some students’ views on Community Workday?
Not all community workdays take place on Fridays, with some happening on Saturdays. For example, Miracle League is a community workday that takes place on Saturdays, and offers individuals with special needs to have fun playing baseball and making friends with one another. Freshman Zoleiah Dunn said that it was a sacrifice for her to give up some of her time on a Saturday to serve with Miracle League, but that it was totally worth it to be able to make such an impact on these individuals.
Savannah Leser is a senior at Raleigh Charter, and this was her last Community Workday organized by RCHS. Leser said, “Honestly I’m going to miss it because I got to hangout with my closest friends. I do think RCHS is trying to provide a balance between academics and life by adding these days. Everyone tries to make a difference somewhere in the world, I’m just glad I made a difference in my school community so we can enjoy a fun day of school.” She also talked about how she has felt inspired to make a bigger impact on her community since doing these community workdays.
