Over the years Model UN has been a program part of many high-schools in the Wake County area. Raleigh Charter High School has offered this program to many students over the years. Here are some of the awards won by students, Verbal Commendation to David Majmundar and Poorva Viswanaath, Honorable Mention to Aadhav Jayashanger, Outstanding Delegate to Vani Garcha, Noreen Majeed, Arjun & Suryan Patel, and Best Delegate to Shivum Datt. One of the members Shivum Datt was asked three questions regarding Model UN and their most recent conference.
What exactly is Model UN?
“Model UN is a simulation, where delegates represent countries or people, often to find a common solution. For me, Model UN isn’t just about committees or conferences, but it’s a place where we can come together to debate global issues, learn different perspectives, and challenge ourselves. You’re able to build a community of curious kids who want to understand the world and work toward solutions.”
What is the purpose of Model UN?
“Here at RCHS at least, the purpose of Model UN is to help students, or delegates, grow into confident speakers, good thinkers, and collaborators. Delegates learn how to communicate ideas clearly, negotiate with others, and approach global problems with diplomacy and open-mindedness. These are skills that extend far beyond the conference room, and will help our delegates contribute to society better.”
Why are there conferences for Model UN yearly?
“Yearly conferences give our delegates the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in a real, dynamic setting with students from around the country. They bring together students from different schools to debate, collaborate, and exchange ideas. Each conference creates a new challenge and a new learning experience, making memories that will quite literally last a lifetime.”
In short, Model UN is supposed to simulate the reality about how countries handle real world issues. Not only just for people learning to become better public speakers but also for people who plan to head into a similar world of diplomacy. The skills used and learned from Model UN can be applied to someone’s real world experience no matter their career choice.
