Do students think AI is helping them learn, or causing them to cheat more? Here’s what people around the school had to say.
AI has become a major part of education, giving students quick access to tutoring, explanations, and help with difficult assignments.
“AI can be helpful when students use it to understand a topic instead of having it do the work for them. There are a lot of times where I don’t understand a topic, but AI is always able to explain it in a simpler version or in a way I understand. Teachers are amazing, but they can’t cater to every students’ needs.” says sophomore Olina Ouyang.
However, some worry that students are becoming too dependent on it and are using AI to cheat and avoid learning. While AI can be a useful resource for those who are struggling with a topic, many are concerned that using it too often can prevent students from developing fundamental skills.
“AI makes schoolwork easier, but most of the time it’s easy to use it to simply cheat instead of trying to learn with it. The line separating support and cheating is very thin and it’s extremely easy to cross.” says junior Sreeram Edula.
Overall, AI can be both helpful and harmful to students. When used as a learning tool, it can provide extra support, explain difficult concepts, and give students another way to learn material. It can also teach in a different perspective and provide useful examples.
However, when students rely on AI to complete assignments, get answers, or do their thinking for them, they may be hindered from developing important skills. As AI starts to be incorporated into education and be of more widespread use, students will have to find a balance between using it for support and making sure they are still learning by themselves.
