Everyone at Raleigh Charter knows what advisory is, a five-minute period extended on Tuesdays, in between your first and second period, where you can regroup, chat with others, and sometimes eat! Everyone knows what advisory is, but why do we have advisory?
Students and teachers share their thoughts on why we have advisory and what their favorite part of advisory is.
Freshman Samyuthat Kimali shares her idea. “I think we have advisory to connect with all grade levels,” she said. “My favorite part of advisory is the food that is brought whenever we have extended advisory.”
Junior Kay Aisenberg tells us her view: “I think we have advisory so we can connect without teachers, and so it makes attendance easier for teachers. My favorite parts of advisory are the announcements and trivia.”
Finally, Environmental Science teacher Mr. Hames fills us in on his idea of the “why” behind advisory. He says, “Our school is based on relationships, and advisory is the only place where you can really slow down and talk to teachers without academics getting in the way. Having an advisor allows you to always have someone there to support you, keep an eye on you, and advocate for you.”
There you have it. Overall, advisory exists to help build connections, create a sense of community, and give students a space to pause during the school day. Whether it’s through conversations, support from teachers, or even just enjoying a snack, advisory plays an important role in making school feel more connected and supportive.
