Even though Thanksgiving break was already over, students in Mr. Rose’s advisory decided they still wanted a moment to slow down and reconnect. So, they put together a relaxed, student-led potluck so students could bring in something to share.
The idea came primarily from two students in the Advisory, Katherine and Isabelle, who felt the group needed some Thanksgiving cheer before the upcoming midterms. Katherine said the potluck started as a simple conversation. “We were talking about advisory food, and it clicked to me that we should do a whole feast for the holidays,” she said. “I figured food usually brings people together, so why not put something together?”
Isabelle was the one who floated the idea into the group chat. “I expected people to want food but not necessarily bring stuff in,” she joked. “But suddenly everyone was claiming dishes. It was the most active the Advisory chat has been all month.”
When the day came, members of the advisory pulled out one big table and set out all the dishes; trays of mac and cheese, apple pie, Bojangles bo-tato rounds, fruit, and much more. Everyone sat around one another, talking and passing dishes around. It was simple, but somehow, the room felt warmer than it ever had on a regular advisory day.
Mr. Rose approved of the plan and let the students handle the rest, which made the event feel even more student-driven. A few students even suggested making it an annual tradition, not because it was fancy or official, but because it made the advisory feel more connected.
It wasn’t a huge celebration, and it wasn’t meant to be. It was simply students sharing food and taking a break together, and that small moment made the advisory ever so closer.
