Current Events In Sudan: What You Need To Know

Images and stories of current events in Sudan have been circulating the internet for a couple weeks now and in today’s day in age it is hard to identify fact from myth, especially with AI growing rapidly, so this article will help you learn what you need to know.

There has been one picture in particular that has been floating around the internet for some time now and that is a satellite image of blood soaked streets in Sudan, and although it seems false this is actually a true picture taken from satellites.

According to many news sources this civil war in Sudan has been ongoing from April of 2023 but really only gained media attention recently due to the images that have been published of the streets in Sudan. The fighting occurring in Sudan is mainly because of a fight of dominance between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

This fighting between the SAF and RSF was triggered by the stalling of integrating the RSF into the regular army of Sudan as well as disagreements of who would lead the new combined forces. In 2019 the power struggle began when Omar al-Bashir was removed and the SAF and RSF vying for control of the military but intense fighting did not start until 2023.

NBC news has spoken out with an article that dives deeper into the conflict and has had survivors share their experiences. “‘They opened direct fire on civilians,’” Musa, 42, said in a voice note to NBC Thursday, adding that it was “extremely intense and people scattered in all directions” as they were chased and run over by the trucks.”

According to NBC’s reporting “Musa was captured along with dozens of others, and he said RSF fighters executed people in front of him. “‘They would ask a man to run,’” he said. “‘Once you start running, they shoot you.’”

Musa’s personal experience gives direct facts of the conflict which helps reporters and civilians identify factual information rather than rumors made up online. Current events all around the world are subjected to rumors and false information so make sure to always double check your sources before spreading false information.
