Some students are upset about the new RCHS tardy policy, believing it is unfair.
Lines of people at the office have been seen almost every morning, especially on mornings with heavy traffic. In the 25-26 school year, a five-minute grace period was given to anyone late, and traffic was an excused absence.
However, in the 26-27 school year, some students have been upset about the new policy, which is lunch detention for anyone who comes in at 9 a.m. or later.
Some students don’t like this because detention cuts into their lunchtime and because of the fact that some people are unable to leave earlier to avoid traffic.
Some people are in carpool groups and take the bus, which leaves them unable to control getting to school on time.
Sophomore Grace Wood said, “I got detention constantly for being late even though I had a valid medical reason.” Grace feels the tardy policy does not account for every student’s needs.
The staff has a different view. Ms. Lynn in the front office stated that “the missed instructional time in class has dropped dramatically” and Ms. Goldberg added that “the goal is to get kids in seats by 9 a.m.”
The new tardy policy has presented an inconvenience to some students, although it seems to have improved attendance throughout the school.
